Lauren Hurwood loves life. Not in an inspirational quote on a cushion kind of way, and definitely not in a polished parts you see on your socials way, but in the tangled, contradictory, messy, beautiful way, that shakes the ordinary upside down and makes it extraordinary. She loves to explore the knotty, complex questions about our human experience.
Always an actor (she trained at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and the Television Workshop), the writing side of her career kick-started in lockdown as she moved back into her childhood home in Leeds.
Surrounded by the multi-generations of mighty women who raised her, Northern life became the foundation of her work. That mix of humour and heart, pathos and punchlines that was so inherent in her upbringing once again becoming the centre of her world.
Writing gave her an opportunity to create the roles she wished she could see both on screen and in the scripts she was being sent. Everyday people navigating life, death, love and loss. Generous souls with a wicked sense of humour. Huge hearted matriarchs with razor sharp tongues. Funny and flawed, people at their best and their worst.
Lauren’s first break came thanks to BAFTA, when she answered a call out for creatives, which would see her paired for a session with BAFTA winner Daisy May Cooper. One session between the two turned into many over months, as Daisy championed and mentored her on C-weetie. Lauren’s first authored series was subsequently optioned by Shiny Button, where she worked closely with Kate Heggie.
From BAFTA, she was in the top 10% of the BBC Writers Room Open Call 2023, and then became part of Channel 4 New Writer’s Scheme, working closely with script editor Jodie Caron and mentored by powerhouse production company SISTER. She is also an Alumni of Soho Theatre Comedy Labs and member of the WGGB and BAFTA Connect.
Currently, Lauren is writing and co-writing many more series ideas.
